Bright New Hope For MMOs!

Or not.

I made a promise to myself that I wouldn’t get all excited about upcoming MMOs for a number of reasons. Top of that list is that there is more hype than quality or delivered features.

That said, I can’t help but be a little excited about the Warhammer 40,000 MMO that THQ is working on. Lately my love for MMOs is diminishing as release after release tends to focus on ‘fantasy’ type genres. A sci-fi MMO? That could be just what the doctor self-prescribed for himself.

Buzz is that it’s projected for late 2012 release.

Yeah, okay, I’m not going to hold my breath.

Who the heck is THQ?

They’re the ones that delivered the Warhammer 40,00 Dawn of War RTS series to the PC. One of the longest standing games on any of my systems and the ones I’m prone to install before anything else when I do get a new system.

I know, I know… you’re thinking, “Smaken, they’ve only ever done RTSes before! However are they going to release a MMO?!”

I can think of a rather successful company that was in much the same boat as THQ is. Of course, I can also think of another Warhammer MMO that was developed and sort of lacked. There were good aspects, but overall? Meh.

I am very curious as to how THQ will deliver this to players. In my opinion, Warhammer 40k is about shooting, chopping, charging into combat, heavy armor, extremes of action and extreme action (difference being one is about making really extreme choices and the other is about boatloads of action). It’s also about conquering areas in varying scopes. Strategic advancement in macro and micro views.¬†Add in some of the vehicles, juggernauts, cybernetic enhancements, various weaponry, jump packs, grenades… omg… I need to go change.

There is a lot of options open to them.

A lot.

What are they going to deliver on?
